The World Baseball Classic is heating up, and the stars are aligning! With the tournament just about a month away, the anticipation is palpable. Team Japan is aiming to defend their thrilling 2023 championship, while the United States is determined to reclaim their glory. Tonight, the full rosters for all 20 participating nations have been unveiled, showcasing a global talent pool ready to battle it out.
We already knew that Aaron Judge, widely considered the best hitter on the planet, would be leading the charge for Team USA as their captain. He committed to manning the outfield for the Stars and Stripes back in April. Judge is the sole Yankee hitter on the US squad, as Cody Bellinger has opted out to concentrate on his preparation for the 2026 MLB season. On the pitching front, closer David Bednar will join Judge, making him the only Yankee pitcher representing the US.
But here's where it gets interesting: even with only two active Yankees on the US roster, the pinstripes will be visible across many teams in the tournament! Great Britain will boast a significant contingent of Yankees. The dynamic Jazz Chisholm Jr., born in the Bahamas, is set to lead the charge. Joining him on the British roster will be right-handed pitching prospect Brendan Beck, and even Tanner Swanson, a Yankees catching coordinator, will be part of the coaching staff.
The Dominican Republic is also bringing some Yankee flavor. Camilo Doval, a formidable reliever, is expected to be a key player in their bullpen. And behind the plate, Austin Wells will be catching for the DR. Wells is eligible to play for the Dominican Republic thanks to his maternal family heritage. Adding to their lineup, utilityman Amed Rosario will also be suiting up for the Dominican Republic.
Puerto Rico is set to feature top pitching prospect Elmer Rodríguez and Fernando Cruz. However, Team PR has faced some significant setbacks, with stars like Carlos Correa and Francisco Lindor being unable to participate due to difficulties in securing player insurance. This is a tough blow for their championship aspirations.
And this is the part most people miss: the connections extend even further! Bench coach Brad Ausmus will be at the helm managing Team Israel, while Jose Caballero will be playing for Panama. We'll also see some familiar faces who are no longer with the Yankees organization. Didi Gregorius will once again proudly represent the Netherlands. Furthermore, a couple of former Yankee catchers will be donning the Italian colors: Francisco Cervelli will manage the team, and Jorge Posada will be on the coaching staff. Even Paul Goldschmidt, currently unsigned but most recently associated with the Yankees, will have a spot on Team USA's bench.
The exhibition games for the WBC are set to commence on March 3rd, with the inaugural pool play game scheduled for March 4th. The United States will kick off their campaign in Houston against Brazil.
Now, I'm curious to hear your thoughts! With so many stars and former Yankees spread across different nations, who do you think has the best chance of winning it all this year? And are you surprised by any of the roster selections or absences? Let me know in the comments below!
