Framber Valdez: A Potential Target?
With key targets secured elsewhere, the spotlight might now shine on Framber Valdez. Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports that the Blue Jays met with Valdez during the GM meetings back in November. This meeting occurred before Cease's signing, and there was mutual interest between the two parties.
Valdez has also garnered interest from other teams, including the Orioles, Giants, Mets, and Red Sox. The Orioles' interest persisted even after signing Pete Alonso for $155 million over five years. The Giants are reportedly leaning towards a short-term deal, while the Mets are considering adding pitching via trade. The Red Sox also met with Valdez, but their needs may have shifted after signing Ranger Suarez and trading for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo.
The Financial Tightrope
But here's where it gets controversial... The Blue Jays' current interest in Valdez is unclear, as is their financial ability to sign him. Their projected 2026 payroll stands at $282 million, with a Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) payroll of $310.5 million. This puts them over the maximum luxury tax threshold of $304 million. While the offer for Tucker would have carried a $35 million average annual value (AAV) plus a $31.5 million luxury tax bill, Valdez's situation is different.
Age and the Bottom Line
Valdez is older than Tucker, Bichette, and Cease. He was projected to land a five-year, $150 million deal on MLBTR's Top 50 Free Agents list. As a second-year luxury tax payor, the Jays would owe $27 million in tax penalties on that $30 million AAV, making Valdez a $57 million total cost in 2026 if they were to sign him. He also rejected a qualifying offer from the Astros, costing the Jays their second- and fifth-highest draft picks in 2026. With a projected rotation of Cease, Trey Yesavage, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Ponce, Valdez might be both too expensive and not a pressing need for Toronto.
Valdez's Impressive Track Record
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the financial considerations, Valdez's performance speaks volumes. From 2022-2025, he accumulated 16.5 fWAR, ranking fifth among qualified starters, just behind Gausman and Cease. A key to his success has been his ability to suppress home runs and generate exceptional groundball rates. His 0.68 HR/9 is tied for fifth-best among qualified starters, and his 60.0% groundball rate is the highest among starters with at least 500 innings.
Durability and Recent Performance
Valdez has also built a reputation for durability. His 767 2/3 innings since the start of 2022 are second-most in the majors. In 2024, he pitched 192 innings with a 3.66 ERA, a 58.6% groundball rate, and an above-average 14.8% K-BB rate. However, he showed some signs of wear towards the end of the season. His ERA in the second half was 5.20 in 71 innings. In August, he only struck out 12.8% of hitters, and in September and October, he allowed an uncharacteristic number of home runs. On the positive side, his sinker remained a dominant pitch.
The Pitching Market and Valdez's Prospects
The market has been favorable for pitchers seeking long-term deals. Cease secured a seven-year deal, and Suarez received a five-year, $130 million contract. Age aside, Valdez's track record suggests he should command a solid contract, at least in terms of AAV.
