Ethiopia-Eritrea Tensions: Ethiopia Demands Troop Withdrawal (2026)

A call for peace in the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia's plea to Eritrea.

Ethiopia has issued a bold statement, demanding that Eritrea withdraw its troops from Ethiopian territory. This plea, delivered through a letter from Ethiopia's Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos to his Eritrean counterpart, highlights a growing concern and a potential flashpoint in the region.

The letter accuses Eritrea of "outright aggression" and alleges that Eritrean forces are conducting joint maneuvers with Ethiopian rebels in the north, even supplying them with weapons. This claim, if true, could be seen as a direct threat to Ethiopia's sovereignty.

Eritrea, however, has remained silent on these accusations, a stance that only adds to the tension. The history between these two nations is fraught with conflict, having fought a devastating border war between 1998 and 2000, resulting in over 100,000 lives lost.

A peace deal, though signed, was never fully realized, and tensions have simmered for decades. The recent civil war in Ethiopia, which saw Eritrea support the Ethiopian army against Tigrayan forces, further complicated matters.

"The recent developments suggest Eritrea has chosen a path of escalation," the Foreign Minister's letter states. "The incursion of Eritrean troops and their joint military exercises with rebel groups are not just provocative; they are acts of aggression."

One of the key issues at stake is Ethiopia's desire for access to the sea. Landlocked Ethiopia considers this access a matter of national survival, and Prime Minister Abiy has described the loss of a port due to Eritrean independence as a "mistake."

In a potential olive branch, the Foreign Minister's letter suggests that if Eritrea withdraws its troops, talks could commence, including discussions on access to the sea through the port of Assab.

However, the situation took a turn last week when Abiy, for the first time, accused Eritrean troops of massacring people in the Ethiopian city of Aksum during the 2020-2022 civil war in Tigray. Eritrea has denied these allegations in the past, following reports of mass killings in Aksum in November 2020.

The shifting alliances have led Ethiopia to claim that Eritrea is now supporting rebels in Tigray who oppose the peace deal that ended the civil war. Eritrea, on the other hand, denies these claims and accuses Ethiopia of fabricating stories to justify a war it has been eager to wage for years.

This complex situation raises many questions: Is a peaceful resolution possible? What role will international mediators play? And, most importantly, can these two nations find a way to coexist without further bloodshed?
