Is the VR46 MotoGP Team Facing a Future Without Valentino Rossi? (2026)

Is the VR46 MotoGP Team's Future in Doubt?

It seems the legendary Valentino Rossi's commitment to his VR46 MotoGP team is under scrutiny, sparking questions about its future. With Rossi's focus divided between his team and his own four-wheel racing endeavors, the MotoGP world is buzzing with speculation.

Rossi, who graced the World Endurance Championship last year, missed the team's 2025 launch and a significant number of races. This absence has fueled whispers about his dedication to the MotoGP project.

Since entering the premier class in 2022, VR46 has achieved impressive results, including three Grand Prix victories and 18 podium finishes. However, even with the advantage of a dominant Ducati bike for much of the season, they didn't secure any wins last season.

But here's where it gets controversial... Liberty Media, the new owners of MotoGP, reportedly desire Rossi's increased involvement, recognizing the marketing boost his presence would bring. Yet, the retired rider, who hung up his racing helmet at the end of 2021, might withdraw from the sport altogether.

One journalist suggests Rossi may feel his mission is accomplished, having nurtured talents through the VR46 Academy. He brought two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia into MotoGP, and Marco Bezzecchi has also flourished.

Simon Patterson of The Race believes Rossi is more open to selling his team than any other MotoGP owner, potentially changing the grid for 2027. Patterson also believes that such a transaction could spell the end of Franco Morbidelli's MotoGP career. There's a theory that Morbidelli's close relationship with Rossi is what keeps him on the grid.

And this is the part most people miss... VR46 is considered the most vulnerable team to a sale. Patterson stated, "I think it’s worth saying that VR46 is, for me, the most vulnerable team on the grid to not exist in ’27, under its current format." He added, "Should there be new ownership – they are the team that is most open to that right now – then there’s no world in which Franco Morbidelli remains, probably on the MotoGP grid as a whole."

Even if Rossi doesn't sell, significant changes could occur before next year. VR46 is in talks with Aprilia as their Ducati satellite contract nears its end.

With Liberty Media's acquisition of MotoGP, interest from potential investors has surged. Considering the US conglomerate's success in F1, team values could soar in the coming years.

Former Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner has already purchased Tech3, while retaining their brand identity. Moreover, star driver Max Verstappen, along with his F1 rival Lewis Hamilton, has expressed interest in buying a MotoGP team.

Controversy Alert: Could VR46 be the perfect opportunity for Verstappen to enter MotoGP ownership? What do you think?
