Get ready for a thrilling ride as we dive into the story of Brad Johnson's Pontiac Firebird Formula 400! This iconic car has quite the journey, and we're about to uncover its transformation.
Imagine this: over nine years ago, Brad embarked on a mission to bring this 1974 Firebird from Rockhampton to the Gold Coast. Initially, it was powered by a stock 350ci Pontiac engine, a TH400, and a 10-bolt diff. But Brad had bigger plans. He upgraded to a period-correct 400ci Pontiac engine, adding a touch of authenticity.
However, the thrill of cruising the streets soon faded, and Brad sought more power. He joined the pursuit of performance, opting for an LS engine. And boy, did he go all out!
Under the hood now lies a built-for-boost 370ci LY6 cast truck block, paired with a Callies crankshaft, Wiseco BoostLine rods, and CP pistons. The MLS head gaskets, Brian Tooley turbo camshaft, and Tremaniac CNC LS3 cylinder heads complete this powerhouse.
But here's where it gets controversial... Brad didn't stop at the engine. He rebuilt the entire car to match its new direction. He sourced an FTI Stage 4 TH400 with a transbrake from Summit Racing and a matching 9-inch billet converter. The braced 35-spline housing, Strange billet HD Pro center, Truetrac, and 3.5:1 gear ratio ensure this Firebird is ready for action.
And this is the part most people miss: the attention to detail in the braking system. Brad equipped his Firebird with 11-inch disc brakes, ensuring precise control during those high-speed moments.
The car sits on Outlaw Drag Intensity wheels, with 17x4.5 fronts and 15x10 rears. The Nankang 165/75R17 and PSR 275/60R15 tires provide the perfect grip for this power machine.
On its first outing to Cleveland Dyno, Brad's Firebird impressed, churning out 660hp on pump 98 and an impressive 801hp on E85 to the hubs.
So, what do you think? Is this the ultimate transformation, or did Brad go too far? Share your thoughts in the comments! We'd love to hear your opinions on this controversial build.
