Tour of Oman: Sebastián Molano's Sprint Victory - A Recap (2026)

A thrilling sprint finish kicked off the Tour of Oman, with Colombian rider Sebastián Molano claiming victory on stage 1. This win marked the UAE Team Emirates-XRG's seventh triumph of the season, an impressive feat achieved just days into February.

In a wide-open sprint, Molano's speed prevailed, edging out Fernando Gaviria of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. Gerben Thijssen, supported by Alpecin-Premier Tech's strong lead-out, secured third place.

"I'm overjoyed! My team's performance was incredible. They positioned me perfectly, shielding me from the wind. Repaying their hard work with a win feels incredible," Molano exclaimed.

But here's where it gets controversial... Molano's victory holds extra significance. Last August, a knee injury forced him to end his season prematurely. After five months without racing and two without even touching his bike, this win is especially sweet.

The sprint, set on wide, straight roads, was mostly incident-free, except for a brief moment when two animals darted across the road.

Unraveling the Race

The stage 1 action began at the Ministry of Tourism, quickly leading into the steep 3km Jabal Road climb. Within 6km, a breakaway formed with José Luis Faura (Burgos Burpellet BH) and Patryk Goszczurny (Visma-Lease a Bike) taking the lead. They were soon joined by Alex Díaz (Caja Rural-Segoros RGA), and together, they built a substantial lead of two and a half minutes.

On the largely flat opening day, the middle section of the 170km stage was relatively calm. UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Alpecin-Premier Tech controlled the pace, keeping the breakaway within reach.

As the race progressed, the break's lead started to diminish. With 40km remaining, the gap was halved, setting the stage for an exciting finale.

In the final 25km, the leaders began attacking each other, but the peloton was closing in. Goszczurny dropped off first, and the remaining two were caught shortly after, bringing the race back together with 20km to go.

The finish was tense yet straightforward, with each sprint team lining up on the wide, straight roads. However, a moment of chaos ensued when two animals crossed the road in front of the bunch.

Alpecin-Premier Tech led the way into the final kilometre, delivering Thijssen to the sprint with a well-organized lead-out. But Molano, perfectly positioned, unleashed his speed and powered to victory. Gaviria's late surge earned him second place, while Thijssen settled for third.

Molano and Gaviria now lead the General Classification (GC), but Goszczurny sits in third due to bonus seconds earned during his breakaway. With hilly stages ahead on Sunday, expect the GC to undergo further transformations on stage 2.
