Empowering Women in Animation: A New Online Initiative
In a bold move to bridge the gap for aspiring animators, Women In Animation (WIA) has unveiled an innovative program that promises to revolutionize the way talent is discovered and nurtured in the animation industry. WIA, a nonprofit championing gender equity, has opened applications for its groundbreaking Portfolio Reviews program. This virtual series aims to connect early-career women and non-binary professionals with industry leaders, offering a unique platform for direct feedback and growth. The program's inception stems from a global member survey, highlighting the critical need for portfolio reviews among artists entering the animation, visual effects, and game development industries.
The inaugural session, led by Matt Roberts of Walt Disney Animation Studios, will focus on character animation, story, and visual development portfolios. Future sessions are expected to explore other disciplines and feature reviewers from diverse studios, creating a comprehensive support system for emerging talent.
Marge Dean, WIA's president, emphasizes the program's dual purpose: "It's not just a service; it's an entire ecosystem. For our members, it's a gateway to growth, and for our partners, it's a glimpse into the talent of the future." WIA's commitment to supporting women and non-binary professionals is evident in this initiative, which aims to break down structural barriers and increase access to resources and opportunities.
The Portfolio Reviews program is designed as a live virtual event, allowing WIA members to register and receive direct feedback on their portfolios from industry experts. Creator-level members can apply to have their portfolios reviewed during the sessions, while Maker-level members can attend and engage in the virtual discussions. Reviewers will select a handful of portfolios for live review, ensuring personalized attention and guidance.
Applications are now open until January 27, with multiple review events planned throughout the year.
